A major crackdown on illicit alcohol production has been carried out in Kisumu County, leading to the dismantling of several Kangara brewing factories and the destruction of over 3,000 litres of the illicit drink. The operation, which took place in Chemelil, involved a coordinated effort by law enforcement and local administration aimed at curbing the production and consumption of illegal alcohol in the region.
The multi-agency team conducted the raid on Sunday, October 26, targeting brewing sites located in Wagunga Village, Kamswa Sub-location, and Nyagoma Location within the Miwani Division of Muhoroni Sub-county. The officers uncovered large quantities of Kangara, a locally brewed illicit liquor, and destroyed the drinks on-site. Several distilling tools and containers used in the illegal production were also confiscated and dismantled.
Authorities noted that the crackdown was part of a sustained national campaign to combat illicit brewing, which continues to threaten public health and safety. The production of Kangara and other unregulated alcoholic drinks has been linked to numerous health risks, including poisoning and death, as well as contributing to social and economic problems in affected communities.
Officials emphasized that the operation reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to eradicating illicit alcohol networks and ensuring compliance with public health and safety regulations. The team vowed to maintain vigilance and conduct similar operations across Kisumu County and other regions to completely dismantle the illicit supply chain.
The crackdown in Kisumu comes shortly after another successful operation targeting illegal drug activities along Kenya’s borders. Earlier this month, authorities destroyed a large consignment of toxic chemicals that had been intercepted at Namanga. The chemicals were reportedly intended for use in large-scale illegal drug manufacturing operations targeting both domestic and international markets.
These consecutive operations demonstrate an intensified effort by Kenyan authorities to combat illegal substances—both alcohol and drugs—through coordinated enforcement, surveillance, and community cooperation. By cracking down on the production and sale of harmful brews, the government aims to protect citizens from dangerous products that compromise health, safety, and productivity.
Officials have urged the public to support the campaign by reporting suspicious brewing or distribution activities in their communities. Continuous cooperation between security agencies and residents remains key to ensuring lasting success in the fight against illicit alcohol and drug trade across Kenya.
