Police officers in Kakamega have impounded a motorcycle transporting 25 kilogrammes of bhang, intensifying the ongoing crackdown on illegal drug trafficking networks in the region.
The incident occurred in Matungu, Kakamega, where officers had set up a roadblock to intercept the suspect. When the motorcyclist approached the checkpoint, he was ordered to stop but chose to defy the directive. In a desperate attempt to evade arrest, he sped past the officers, running over a spike barrier in the process. The motorcycle’s front tyre was punctured, forcing him to stop a short distance away.
Realising he was about to be arrested, the suspect abandoned the motorcycle together with the illicit cargo and fled on foot. Police officers recovered the motorcycle and the 25 kilograms of cannabis sativa, which have since been secured as exhibits. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fugitive, with authorities warning that operations to dismantle drug trafficking cartels will be intensified across Kakamega and neighbouring counties.
This latest seizure adds to a string of recent anti-narcotics operations that have disrupted the flow of illegal substances into various parts of the country. Just a day earlier, officers in Uasin Gishu conducted a major bust along the busy Eldoret–Malaba highway.
Acting on intelligence reports, police intercepted a lorry suspected of transporting narcotics. Upon inspection, six sacks of plant material believed to be cannabis sativa were discovered hidden beneath cartons of assorted goods. The consignment weighed about 190 kilogrammes, making it one of the largest hauls in recent weeks. The vehicle and the seized drugs were secured as part of the investigation.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling networks involved in the distribution of narcotics, stressing that the fight against drug abuse remains a top security and public health priority. Police have called on members of the public to provide timely information that could help curb the trafficking and consumption of illicit substances, particularly in vulnerable communities where young people are often the primary targets.
The consecutive operations highlight the growing vigilance of law enforcement agencies and their resolve to stop drug peddlers from exploiting key highways and transport corridors. As the manhunt for the fugitive in Kakamega continues, security officials maintain that no effort will be spared in bringing perpetrators to justice.
