Security agencies have intensified operations against the sale and distribution of illicit brews and narcotics across the country, leading to multiple successful interceptions in different regions.
In Meru County, officers from Maua Police Station intercepted a motorcycle ferrying four jerricans of an illicit brew known locally as Naisu. The consignment, totaling 80 litres, was discovered during a routine patrol in Antubochiuo Location, Igembe South Sub-County. While the motorcycle was impounded and the brew secured as evidence, the rider managed to escape arrest.
In a separate operation in Homa Bay County, officers from Rodi Police Station stopped another motorcyclist on suspicion of carrying contraband. Upon inspection, they uncovered 98 large rolls of cannabis sativa hidden in the package. The suspect was immediately arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment, while the drugs were secured as evidence.
Meanwhile, in Garissa County, police arrested a suspected drug peddler in the Ziwani area of Garissa town. The individual was found with 20 balls of cannabis sativa concealed in a red carrier bag, along with KSh 1,800 believed to be proceeds from drug sales. He was detained at Garissa Police Station, and the exhibits were recorded for court proceedings.
These operations come in the wake of a renewed directive from the Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary, who recently announced a 100-day Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) targeting illicit alcohol and narcotics. The crackdown seeks to dismantle networks of illegal trade that pose a growing threat to public health and national security.
The Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the manufacture, sale, and consumption of illicit substances undermine communities, destroy livelihoods, and fuel criminal networks. Sub-county security teams have been instructed to collaborate closely with community stakeholders to suppress the vice.
In addition, stern warnings have been issued to politicians and business operators suspected of supporting or protecting illicit traders. Authorities maintain that collusion or negligence among leaders and enforcement officers only serves to embolden criminal networks while destroying legitimate businesses.
With the sustained enforcement measures, police and administrators across different counties have been urged to remain vigilant and ensure that illegal brews and drugs do not find their way into local markets. The intensified operations reflect the government’s determination to curb the menace, protect citizens, and restore order in affected regions.
