Police Scotland has launched an investigation into allegations of mishandled cremated remains and fraudulent funeral plans at A Milne Independent Funeral Directors, based in Glasgow and Dumbarton. The investigation, dubbed Operation Koine, was initiated in April 2024 after multiple complaints were filed by families who suspected their loved ones’ remains had been mishandled or lost.
To date, more than 70 complaints have been lodged, with victims claiming their prepaid funeral plans were either mismanaged or linked to fraudulent activity. The inquiry has uncovered disturbing reports of missing ashes, leaving many families in distress over the fate of their loved ones’ remains.
Three individuals, including two women aged 37 and 55, and a 56-year-old man, were arrested in connection with the investigation last year. They were later released pending further inquiries. Detective Superintendent Robert Bowie, leading the investigation, has confirmed that the police are reviewing hundreds of leads and are actively seeking more information from anyone who may have been affected. The scale of the investigation has been described as unprecedented, with the financial crimes unit working closely with law enforcement agencies across the UK to tackle similar cases.
Despite the alarming nature of the allegations, Bowie assured that the majority of the cremated remains recovered from the two funeral home branches had been returned to the affected families. However, some remains are still unclaimed, and police are urging anyone with concerns to come forward.
Victim Support Scotland is providing crucial support for those affected by the investigation. Emotional and practical assistance is available to help families cope with the trauma of potentially losing the remains of their loved ones, as well as dealing with the financial uncertainty stemming from the alleged funeral plan fraud. A helpline has been set up for those seeking guidance or wishing to report additional concerns.
This ongoing investigation highlights the devastating impact of fraudulent activity on vulnerable individuals and families during an already emotionally challenging time. As the police continue to work through the case, there is a strong appeal for further information from the public to ensure justice for all affected.
