Police officers in Laikipia County have successfully recovered stolen livestock following a coordinated security operation in Matwiku Sub-Location. The recovery took place after armed bandits abandoned the animals at the Laikipia Nature Conservancy during a police pursuit.
The operation was launched after a local herder reported that his son had been attacked by armed bandits while tending to livestock in the Mlima Jangili area. According to police reports, the attackers made away with thirty sheep and goats and seven cows. Upon receiving the report, a joint security team composed of police officers and local enforcement units was immediately mobilized to track down the suspects and recover the stolen animals.
The security teams moved swiftly and pursued the bandits across rough terrain. The operation led them to the Laikipia Nature Conservancy, where the stolen animals were later discovered abandoned. The police confirmed that all thirty-seven animals—comprising sheep, goats, and cows—were safely recovered. The bandits, however, managed to escape into a nearby thicket, prompting an ongoing manhunt in the area.
Authorities have since intensified patrols in Matwiku and surrounding regions to prevent further livestock theft incidents. Security teams are maintaining a strong presence in the area, with a focus on curbing the activities of armed groups known to target herders and livestock owners.
The police have commended the collaborative efforts of all officers and agencies involved in the operation. They noted that swift communication between local residents and security forces played a key role in ensuring the quick recovery of the animals.
Local residents have welcomed the recovery, saying it restores confidence in security operations across the county. They have also called for increased surveillance and regular patrols in livestock-prone regions to deter banditry and safeguard livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the search for the armed suspects continues, with security officers urging the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals connected to the incident. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security in Laikipia, stressing that no effort will be spared in ensuring that perpetrators of livestock theft and related crimes are brought to justice.
The recovery operation marks another success in the ongoing crackdown on banditry and livestock theft across the region, reinforcing the government’s resolve to protect communities and promote lasting security in Laikipia County.
