The National Police Service (NPS) has assured Kenyans that it is fully prepared to provide robust security during the upcoming November 27 by-elections. In a statement released on Thursday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the service has put in place a “robust, multi-faceted security plan” in partnership with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Nyaga emphasized that the security strategy aligns with the constitutional mandate to protect lives, property, and uphold law and order. He reiterated that officers will be deployed before, during, and after the polls to guarantee the safety of voters, officials, and all stakeholders.
The IEBC has cleared 181 candidates to contest across 24 electoral areas, including one senatorial seat in Baringo County and six National Assembly seats in Magarini, Banissa, Mbeere North, Ugunja, Kasipul, and Malava. The remaining 17 contests are for county assembly seats spread across Tana River, Garissa, Machakos, Turkana, Samburu, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Narok, Kajiado, Kakamega, Bungoma, Nyamira, and Nairobi City.
Nyaga issued a stern warning to political candidates, supporters, and agents, urging them to adhere strictly to the law. He said the NPS would not tolerate violence, hate speech, incitement, or the destruction of property.
“We will not tolerate any form of violence, incitement, hate speech, destruction of property, or disruption of public order,” he said, adding that any unlawful actions would be met with the full force of the law.
His statement comes amid heightened political tension following the deadly clashes in West Kamagak Ward, Homa Bay County, on November 6, where two people lost their lives and others sustained injuries.
Nyaga encouraged the public to remain calm and turn out to vote without fear, noting that officers will be stationed across polling centres to maintain order. He urged Kenyans to report suspicious activities through police emergency numbers or anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI.
Nyaga concluded by affirming the NPS’s neutrality and commitment to safeguarding the electoral process.
