Police officers in Meru have successfully intercepted a major drug trafficking operation after seizing 25 kilograms of cannabis sativa that was being transported in a public service vehicle. The operation, carried out following a crucial intelligence tip-off, targeted a Nairobi–Maua-bound matatu with registration number KCS 884N.
Acting swiftly on the information received, officers flagged down the vehicle and conducted a thorough search. During the inspection, the officers discovered the narcotics carefully concealed inside passenger luggage, including a black suitcase, a black backpack, and a white carrier bag. The drugs had been packed in a manner intended to disguise them among the other passengers’ belongings to avoid detection.
The driver of the vehicle informed the officers that the luggage in question belonged to two of his passengers. The suspects were immediately taken into custody and escorted to Meru Police Station, where they are being held as investigations continue. Police have confirmed that the suspects will face charges related to possession and trafficking of illegal drugs once the ongoing investigations are concluded.
Authorities revealed that samples of the recovered substance have been forwarded to the Government Chemist for further analysis to verify its authenticity. The estimated street value of the seized bhang stands at approximately KSh 750,000.
Law enforcement officials have commended the swift coordination and vigilance of the officers who conducted the operation. They noted that such proactive measures are vital in dismantling organized networks involved in drug distribution across the country.
