Police officers in Kitui County arrested a motorcycle rider found transporting cannabis sativa along the Mwingi township highway. The suspect was intercepted during an operation targeting narcotics and illicit brews in the region.
The individual was allegedly ferrying the cannabis, which had been wrapped in a polythene bag, when law enforcers stopped him. Officers detained the suspect and placed him in custody pending arraignment in court. Both the motorcycle and the cannabis were seized and secured as evidence.
Authorities noted that the arrest was part of an ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse. Security operations in the region have been intensified to curb the rising circulation of illicit brews and narcotics, with officers vowing to remain vigilant in protecting communities from harmful substances.
Officials confirmed that the Mwingi incident is one of several similar operations recently conducted across the country. In a separate case, police in Trans Nzoia County recovered 20 kilograms of cannabis during a patrol in the Sabwani area. Officers on routine checks encountered two individuals on a motorcycle without visible registration plates.
The suspects reportedly fled on spotting the patrol vehicle, abandoning their motorcycle during the chase. In the process, one of them dropped a sack weighing 90 kilograms. Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain cannabis with an estimated street value of Ksh200,000. The motorcycle and the recovered drugs were impounded as investigations continued.
Law enforcement agencies have emphasized that such crackdowns are designed to dismantle networks engaged in drug trafficking and illicit liquor production. They also warned that individuals found transporting, distributing, or selling narcotics will face prosecution.
