Police officers in Laikipia East Sub-County have intensified their fight against illicit alcohol and drug abuse following a successful security operation in Nanyuki that led to the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of illegal substances.
The operation, which was conducted on Saturday, August 23, targeted notorious hotspots within Likii Estate and Ichuga Shopping Centre. Acting on intelligence, officers raided the areas and seized three litres of an illicit brew suspected to be chang’aa along with 100 rolls of cannabis. The two suspects apprehended during the exercise were immediately taken into custody for further questioning and processing at the local police station.
Authorities confirmed that the recovered substances are being preserved as exhibits and will be presented in court to strengthen the prosecution’s case. Police emphasized that such operations are part of a broader strategy to eradicate the circulation of illegal alcohol and narcotics in the region.
The crackdown comes amid heightened government efforts to tackle the menace of illicit brews and drug abuse, which continue to devastate families and communities. Recently, a special multi-agency task force was formed to spearhead nationwide operations targeting manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of illegal substances. The team comprises security personnel and regulatory agencies mandated to ensure compliance with existing laws.
The government has vowed to maintain momentum in dismantling networks that fuel the trade in dangerous substances. Officials have pledged that operations will not be limited to Central Kenya but will spread across the entire country, targeting establishments operating without proper licensing or using illegal means to distribute toxic brews and drugs.
Residents of Nanyuki and the surrounding areas have been urged to continue supporting security agencies by sharing information that could help identify individuals or groups involved in the illegal trade. Police stress that community cooperation is vital in preventing the spread of substances that not only endanger health but also contribute to rising cases of insecurity.
The recent arrests highlight the authorities’ determination to safeguard the public from the harmful effects of illicit brews and narcotics. As the crackdown intensifies, security agencies have reiterated their commitment to upholding law and order, ensuring that offenders face justice, and creating a safer environment for all citizens.
