Police in Rusinga Island, Homa Bay County, successfully arrested three individuals and seized large quantities of illicit substances in a well-coordinated operation on October 11, 2025. Acting on a tip-off from local residents, officers from the Mbita Police Station targeted an illegal alcohol and drug trade in the area, culminating in the raid.
During the operation, authorities confiscated 42 litres of chang’aa, 29 rolls of cannabis sativa, and 83 packets of uncustomised Supermatch cigarettes. The suspects were immediately taken into custody at Mbita Police Station and are awaiting court proceedings. The contraband has been secured at the station as part of ongoing investigations.
The police emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging community members to continue providing valuable information to support crime prevention efforts. The NPS reiterated that vigilance and prompt reporting are key to tackling illegal activities in the region.
This crackdown follows a similar successful operation in Nyamira County, where police arrested a woman and seized over 500 litres of chang’aa and 20 litres of Kangara, a key ingredient in illicit alcohol production. Both incidents highlight the ongoing problem of illegal alcohol brewing and drug abuse in Kenya, with law enforcement calling on the public to assist in curbing these issues.
The authorities are committed to combating the negative impact of illicit alcohol and drugs, which pose serious health and safety risks to communities. Public vigilance and active involvement remain crucial in ensuring the success of these operations and reducing the prevalence of such illegal activities across the country.
