Mombasa County has marked a historic milestone with the confirmation of 320 health staff from temporary contracts to permanent and pensionable terms. The move is a significant boost to the health sector, strengthening the county’s ability to deliver quality and reliable healthcare services to its residents.
The announcement was made during a high-level event in Mombasa City, where national and county leadership underscored the importance of investing in human resources for health. The confirmation reflects the government’s commitment to improving job security for health workers, ensuring stability in service delivery, and motivating staff to serve with dedication.
The achievement was largely made possible by Mombasa’s impressive revenue performance, with the county generating KSh 1.5 billion from the Social Health Authority (SHA) over the past 11 months. This performance places Mombasa at the top nationally, with a remarkable achievement rate of 68.4%.
Leadership at both national and county levels hailed the milestone as a demonstration of how strong financial management directly impacts service delivery. The focus on health financing has enabled the county to transition staff to more secure employment terms, thereby creating a more resilient healthcare workforce.
President William Ruto emphasized that the dedication of county health workers and the support of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) have been central to Mombasa’s success. He challenged other counties to emulate this model, pointing out that improved revenue collection and prudent resource utilization can fast-track the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across the country.
Governor Abdulswamad Nassir reaffirmed Mombasa’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and investing in human resources as a foundation for sustainable development. He noted that the county’s leadership continues to prioritize health sector reforms to ensure residents have access to affordable and quality care.
The confirmation of the 320 health staff is expected to enhance staff morale, improve retention rates, and increase efficiency in healthcare delivery. By stabilizing the workforce, Mombasa sets a benchmark for other counties to follow in the quest to achieve UHC.
With this development, Mombasa has positioned itself as a trailblazer in healthcare financing and human resource management, reinforcing the message that investment in people is central to building stronger health systems for the nation.
