Tension gripped Lugari, Kakamega County, after the body of Munyuki Secondary School Principal, Simon Isiaho Shange, was discovered floating on Kipkaren River on Saturday morning. His disappearance earlier in the week had raised alarm among locals and students, who were left in shock when the grim discovery was made.
The finding sparked outrage in the area, leading to violent protests as angry residents and students from the school marched to Lumakanda Police Station. The demonstrators accused authorities of failing to act swiftly when the principal went missing. During the protest, window panes at the police station were shattered, and several vehicles parked nearby were damaged. Police were forced to disperse the crowd to restore calm.
According to reports, the body was retrieved and moved to the mortuary, pending a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death. Investigators have not ruled out foul play, saying they are considering both drowning and murder as possible causes.
The controversy surrounding Shange’s death began on November 3, following an accident along the Eldoret–Malaba Highway, in which he was allegedly involved before vanishing under mysterious circumstances. His disappearance and subsequent death have ignited speculation and political debate in the region, with community members demanding transparency and justice.
Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed that a special team of detectives has been assigned to handle the case. He assured the public that thorough investigations are underway to uncover the truth and bring those responsible, if any, to justice.
Elsewhere, tragedy struck in Kandutura, Nyandarua County, where a 73-year-old man was found dead after a violent altercation with his brother. Police arrested the suspect and reported that the victim’s body bore multiple injuries, including head and leg wounds.
Meanwhile, in Nandi Hills, Nandi County, a man died after consuming a suspected poisonous brew. Two others were rushed to hospital in stable condition after being found unconscious outside a wines and spirits outlet in Chemomi area. Authorities collected samples of the drink for testing as part of the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews and drugs across the country.
The incidents highlight a growing concern over safety, violence, and the rise of mysterious deaths in different parts of Kenya, sparking calls for accountability and swift justice.
