A tragic incident has shaken the community at Kenyatta University following the discovery of a student’s lifeless body in his house at Kahawa Wendani. The deceased, identified as Bradley Webale, was a fourth-year student. He was found lying motionless in his residence located in the Kizito area of Mwihoko, Nairobi. Reports indicate that he had been suffering from a short illness prior to his death.
Police officers who responded to the scene found no visible injuries on the body. Webale had reportedly complained of stomach pain and had sought medical attention on May 19, just a few days before his untimely death. His body was transferred to the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
In another tragic case reported in Homa Bay, a 67-year-old man was also found dead in his home. Identified as Gibson Otieno Nguka, his body was discovered seated upright in his house in Got Rabuor area. Police confirmed the discovery and moved his body to a local mortuary pending an autopsy. The cause of death remains unclear, and authorities are conducting further investigations.
Meanwhile, a somber incident occurred in Kawangware, Nairobi, where a 35-year-old man died by suicide in the home of his estranged wife. The man, Samuel Oluoch, had reportedly been separated from his wife for about a year. He returned to her residence on the morning of May 20 and was later found hanging from the roof using a bedsheet. According to the wife, the deceased had been absent due to ongoing domestic disputes. No suicide note was found, leaving the motive for the act uncertain. His body was taken to the mortuary as police began a formal inquiry into the incident.
In yet another distressing occurrence, a 27-year-old man in Kayole, Nairobi, died by suicide after ingesting poison. Neighbors found him in severe pain on his bed, where he reportedly admitted to having consumed poison. They rushed him to a hospital, but he succumbed while receiving treatment. His body was also transferred to a mortuary as police continued their investigations.
These incidents highlight a concerning rise in suicide cases in Nairobi and other regions. Authorities note that as many as two suicide cases are reported daily, sparking urgent calls for enhanced mental health support and preventive strategies. Mental health experts and international organizations have linked such cases to various stressors, including unemployment, financial hardship, academic pressure, family disputes, and mental illnesses such as depression and bipolar disorder. Other risk factors include a history of suicide in the family, previous suicide attempts, substance abuse, and social isolation.
As these investigations proceed, there is growing concern about the mental health crisis affecting individuals across different age groups and social backgrounds. Community leaders and health officials continue to urge individuals facing mental distress to seek help and counseling, while also encouraging society to foster supportive environments to reduce the stigma around mental health issues.
