Seven individuals have been arraigned at the Kiambu Law Court following their alleged involvement in the violent protests that erupted in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, on June 25, 2025. The suspects are facing serious criminal charges, including arson, robbery with violence, shop breaking, and theft.
The individuals identified as Sammy Ndung’u Kariuki, also known as Ndoji; Simon Njoroge Hiuhu; Ali Shama Tabet; Lawrence Kariuki Ndung’u; James Njuguna Mwaura; Lewis Kariuki Njuhi; and Peter Njenga Ngina were presented before the court on Monday. Authorities stated that investigations had linked them to the chaos that left a trail of destruction in its wake.
Detectives based in Kikuyu Sub-County presented evidence connecting the seven to various criminal acts committed during the protests. The court, upon reviewing the submissions, ordered that the suspects be held for seven days at Kiambu Police Station to allow for the continuation of investigations.
The protests, initially staged in opposition to proposed government policies, quickly descended into violent confrontations that resulted in significant property damage and loss of life. While human rights organisations have reported at least 16 fatalities, official government figures place the number of deaths at 10.
In addition to the loss of life, the demonstrations caused extensive damage to both public and private property. Authorities reported that 27 government vehicles, including those belonging to both national and county governments, were destroyed. An additional 65 privately owned vehicles, including a school bus, were also vandalised or burned — many within police stations and government compounds.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) emphasized its continued commitment to ensuring that individuals who engage in criminal activities during protests are brought to justice. It noted that thorough investigations are ongoing and promised that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Meanwhile, the government confirmed that a comprehensive probe into the full extent of the damage, casualties, and those responsible is still underway. The aim is to establish accountability and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Security agencies have been urged to remain vigilant, with a focus on safeguarding both public and private infrastructure and maintaining law and order across the country. As investigations continue, the public has been called upon to remain calm and allow the justice system to operate independently.
