A 48-year-old soldier tragically collapsed and died during a routine morning jog at the School of Military Engineering camp in Isiolo town. The incident, which occurred on the morning of July 22, has left the military fraternity in shock as investigations into the cause of death continue.
The soldier, Senior Sergeant Humphrey Opondo, was participating in a scheduled physical exercise alongside other service members when he suddenly fell unconscious. Fellow officers and medical personnel on site immediately rushed him to a nearby dispensary for emergency attention, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Preliminary reports indicate that the cause of Opondo’s sudden collapse remains unknown. Authorities have stated that a postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The body was transferred to a local mortuary, and the soldier’s family has since been informed of the tragic development. Military and regular police officers have been tasked with gathering more details regarding the incident.
In a separate incident, a passenger traveling on a bus from Mandera to Nairobi also passed away unexpectedly during the journey. According to the bus crew, the passenger requested a brief stop to relieve himself along the Rhamu-Elwak-Garissa Road. After resuming the journey, fellow passengers later discovered that the man was unresponsive.
The bus driver stopped to confirm the passenger’s condition and realized that he had died. The bus was then driven to Elwak town, where the matter was reported to the local authorities. Documents found among the passenger’s belongings indicated that he was heading to Nairobi to seek medical treatment.
The deceased passenger’s body was taken to a nearby mortuary where an autopsy was performed. After the examination, the body was released for burial, although the exact findings of the postmortem were not publicly disclosed. The bus driver was cleared to proceed with the remaining passengers, who commended the professionalism and sensitivity with which the situation was handled by the crew and police.
These two incidents serve as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of regular health check-ups, particularly for individuals engaged in strenuous activities or living with medical conditions.
