A dramatic revelation has emerged in the ongoing Starlet Wahu murder case, with a key witness testifying that the prime suspect, John Matara, used a false identity when seeking medical attention at South B Hospital on the night of the incident.
According to the testimony, the accused arrived at the hospital around 10 pm, bleeding heavily from his arms and legs. He was received at the hospital gate due to the severity of his injuries. Witnesses recalled that he had a white towel soaked in blood tied around one of his legs, and doctors attending to him noted he had lost a significant amount of blood.
When asked to provide personal details for billing, the man identified himself as “Fredrick Opondo,” aged 36, and gave a phone number. However, his behavior quickly drew attention, as he reportedly turned hostile toward the nurses on duty. The medical team pressed him to provide information about his relatives, as hospital policy required critically injured patients not to be left unattended. He insisted that he had no wife but mentioned having a mother who lived far away from Nairobi.
The accused was later referred to Mbagathi Hospital for specialized treatment. The court also heard that he had been brought to the facility by boda boda riders who claimed they found him bleeding by the roadside. He allegedly told them that he had been attacked by thieves, which contradicted other details later revealed in court.
Significantly, a man who later arrived at the hospital seeking him gave a conflicting account. He disclosed that he had been following the accused after seeing him leave an apartment bleeding profusely. This raised suspicion about Matara’s version of events and deepened the mystery surrounding the circumstances that led to Starlet Wahu’s tragic death.
The testimony adds to the mounting evidence in the case, which has already seen forensic findings, including items recovered from the crime scene, and accounts from other witnesses linking Matara to Wahu’s murder. The revelation that he used an alias at the hospital further complicates his defense and strengthens the prosecution’s argument that he deliberately attempted to conceal his identity after the incident.
