Police in Mombasa are investigating the sudden death of a 35-year-old suspect, Simon Warui, who collapsed and died after being arrested on theft charges. Warui, who had been apprehended on September 17, 2025, by officers from the Urban division for stealing by a servant, reportedly appeared weak and anxious upon his arrival at Mombasa’s Central Police Station.
After his arrest, Warui requested to visit the toilet. While inside the station’s restroom, police officers reportedly heard a loud noise and rushed to the scene, only to find Warui lying on the floor with blood coming from his nose. Authorities quickly transported him to a nearby hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.
The body was moved to the mortuary as investigations into the cause of death began. Police are awaiting an autopsy to determine whether any foul play occurred. Meanwhile, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been notified, as per protocol, to ensure transparency in the investigation process.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of suspects in police custody, especially since there have been past cases where suspects were found dead in similar circumstances. In some instances, it was later revealed that the victims had been subjected to police brutality, which led to their deaths. These previous cases have resulted in legal action and scrutiny of law enforcement practices.
The mysterious nature of Warui’s death has sparked further investigation, with many wondering whether it was an accident, medical issue, or something more sinister. The authorities are determined to establish the truth, with the IPOA tasked with reviewing the case and ensuring that justice is served.
In a related matter, another death is under investigation in Nairobi. In the Ziwani area, a man named Abednego Wambua was found dead in his home after being unreachable for several days. Neighbors were concerned when they couldn’t get in touch with him and subsequently broke down his door. The body was discovered lying under a pile of clothes, with no visible injuries. Police are investigating the cause of his death, which remains unclear at this point.
These incidents contribute to the ongoing concerns about the rise in unexplained deaths in the region, and the authorities are under increasing pressure to address these troubling cases swiftly.
