Alex Mutua, a key suspect in the murder of British national Campbell Scott, has denied the charges leveled against him. Appearing before Justice James Wakiaga on Tuesday, Mutua was formally charged with murder, an offence he is accused of committing on February 16, 2025, in the Pipeline area of Nairobi. He pleaded not guilty.
The court heard that Mutua, in the company of other individuals, allegedly lured Scott into a business meeting under false pretenses. Scott, who had been in Nairobi for undisclosed business, was reported missing on February 17. His decomposing body was later discovered in Makongo Forest, Makueni County.
As investigations continue, the court has ordered the preparation of a pre-bail report, which is to be filed within 21 days. Mutua is scheduled to return to court on June 17, 2025, for a pre-trial conference and a hearing on his bail application.
Authorities believe the group of suspects may have orchestrated the meeting as part of a larger plan to rob and kill the British national. The case took a dramatic turn when one of the key suspects, Samuel Musembi Kamitu, reportedly attempted suicide by ingesting poison and later stabbed himself to death while hiding in Dandora estate, Nairobi.
Two other suspects, identified as Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, also known as Edu, and Bernard Mbunga Mbusu, are still at large. Police have launched a manhunt to track down the fugitives believed to have played active roles in the murder.
Mutua is being held alongside another suspect, Albunus Mutinda Nzioki. Both are currently cooperating with detectives in efforts to piece together the events leading to Scott’s death.
The gruesome killing of Campbell Scott has drawn attention both locally and internationally, with authorities under pressure to bring all perpetrators to justice. As the investigation unfolds, the court proceedings will be closely watched by observers seeking accountability for the brutal crime that cut short the life of the British national.
