A peculiar and unsettling scene recently unfolded at Makupa Police Station in Mombasa, where a young man who had been arrested in connection with the theft of two goats began exhibiting bizarre behavior during police interrogation. According to witnesses and footage that quickly spread on social media, the man suddenly lost his ability to speak and instead began mimicking the sounds of animals crowing like a rooster and bleating like a goat leaving officers baffled.
Initially, the interrogation proceeded normally, with police asking routine questions about the man’s identity, residence, and tribal affiliation. However, as the questioning progressed, the man appeared to become unresponsive in conventional terms. When asked to state his name and explain the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft, he emitted animal sounds in place of words. The situation took an even more bizarre turn when he was asked about the whereabouts of the stolen goats instead of answering, he continued bleating, seemingly calm but entirely incomprehensible.
The video shows officers asking, “What is your name? What crime did you commit? When did you come to Mombasa? What is your tribe? Where is your home?” Each time, the man responded with animal-like vocalizations, avoiding human speech entirely.
This strange incident sparked mixed reactions online and among the officers present, with some suspecting the involvement of witchcraft or spiritual possession. Others viewed it as a possible psychological episode or a strategic act meant to avoid prosecution.
Interestingly, this is not the first time such an event has occurred. In a similar incident in March 2023, a woman named Mary Mbithi, who was involved in a murder case, began bleating like a goat inside the Machakos Law Courts. She had been scheduled to appear for a mention of her case, but the courtroom was thrown into confusion when she began producing animal-like sounds, halting proceedings and raising questions about her mental and emotional state.
The repetition of such incidents has sparked debate in some communities about whether suspects may be using these behaviors as a tactic to delay justice or if deeper, unexplained forces are at play. In both cases, the affected individuals appeared calm and unaware of the shock they were causing, leaving authorities and the public searching for explanations in a space that blurs the lines between legal responsibility, mental health, and cultural beliefs.
