At least ten people have been confirmed dead following devastating mudslides that swept through parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County. The tragedy occurred after heavy rains pounded the region overnight, triggering landslides in several villages within the Chesongoch area.
Authorities reported that rescue teams are still combing through the affected areas to locate missing residents. Several homes were destroyed as torrents of mud and debris flowed down the slopes, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary ordered the deployment of helicopters to support rescue and evacuation efforts. The aircraft are being used to airlift injured residents to hospitals in Eldoret for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, rescue teams comprising police officers, the Red Cross, and county disaster response units are working tirelessly to reach isolated areas cut off by floods and landslides.
Local police confirmed that multiple bodies had been recovered from the debris while others remain unaccounted for. Survivors described terrifying scenes as the ground gave way in the middle of the night, sending mud and rocks crashing through homes and farms.
Chesongoch Mission Hospital was also affected after being inundated with floodwaters. Patients were quickly evacuated and relocated to safer areas as emergency responders worked to minimize further casualties.
Transport activities in the area have been completely halted as major roads were rendered impassable by flooding and debris. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and remain on high alert until weather conditions improve.
Mudslides, also referred to as landslides or mudflows, occur when water-saturated soil and rocks lose stability and flow downhill. They are common in steep or mountainous regions, especially following prolonged or heavy rainfall. The situation is often worsened by deforestation, poor drainage, or human activities that destabilize slopes.
As rescue operations continue, officials have warned that the death toll could rise as more areas become accessible. Emergency teams are prioritizing search and evacuation missions, while the government has assured residents that all necessary support will be provided to those affected.
