Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the vandalism of Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) equipment along Mombasa Road near Nyayo Stadium. The arrests occurred on Sunday, and among those apprehended was a serving police officer.
According to a statement released by the National Police Service (NPS), the suspects were part of a larger group of about ten individuals who were actively digging up and vandalizing copper cables. The group was reportedly armed with crude weapons and appeared to be well-organized, targeting critical infrastructure in an area that has recently experienced similar incidents of electrical equipment vandalism.
“While several suspects escaped, three were apprehended, including a police officer. All three suspects, along with the recovered materials, are currently in police custody as investigations continue,” the statement read.
This incident highlights a growing concern over the theft and destruction of essential utility infrastructure, which not only causes massive service disruptions but also endangers lives and results in costly repairs. KPLC has previously decried the rising cases of copper cable theft, which severely hampers electricity supply and maintenance efforts.
The NPS expressed gratitude to members of the public for providing the information that enabled the arrests, and reaffirmed its resolve to crack down on such criminal activities. “The National Police Service is thankful for the information from the public that led to this arrest and warns the general public against engaging in vandalism and other criminal activities,” the statement continued.
The arrest of a police officer among the suspects has raised further concerns about possible collusion or lax enforcement within the force. The NPS, however, stated that it remains committed to upholding integrity and the rule of law, regardless of who is implicated.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The police have promised to take firm action against all offenders involved in infrastructure vandalism, emphasizing that such acts will not be tolerated.
