Mombasa authorities have arrested six suspects involved in trafficking bhang valued at Ksh.72 million. The arrests, carried out by the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), occurred during separate operations in different parts of the city.
Detectives intercepted a truck on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway after receiving a tip-off. The truck, driven by Nolden Ogola Misieba and his co-driver Andrew Kaida, was found carrying 50 sacks containing long rolls of bhang wrapped in khaki paper, weighing a total of 2,400 kilograms. The duo was arrested on the spot.
Further investigations led to the interception of three additional vehicles believed to be part of the distribution network. Jefferson Kamau and his accomplice Lawrence Onyango were arrested alongside drivers John Lutomia and Samuel Juma Okoth.
“The three vehicles were intended to transport the seized bhang for distribution across Mombasa and surrounding areas,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed.
All six suspects are currently in custody and undergoing processing. The seized drugs and vehicles are being held as exhibits while investigations continue.
This operation underscores law enforcement’s commitment to combating narcotics trafficking in coastal regions, disrupting networks that supply illegal drugs to local communities.
Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities, emphasizing that community tips play a crucial role in curbing the spread of illegal substances.
As investigations continue, the DCI has pledged to track down other individuals connected to the distribution chain, aiming to dismantle the networks facilitating large-scale drug trafficking in the region.
The arrests mark one of the largest seizures of bhang in Mombasa this year, highlighting the ongoing challenges authorities face in controlling narcotics distribution in Kenya.
