A wave of shock has gripped residents of Chumvini, Taita Taveta County, following the brutal murder of an elderly couple in their home. The victims, 82-year-old Tito Musyoka and his 73-year-old wife Angela Thambi, were found lying dead in their beds on August 28, 2025, long after the horrific attack.
According to police, Musyoka’s body had a deep cut to the throat and was discovered lying in a pool of blood, while his wife also sustained a deep cut in the neck. Reports indicate that the woman died on the spot, while Musyoka was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Detectives revealed that the house had been ransacked by the attackers, though it is still unclear what, if anything, was stolen. The couple was alone in the house at the time of the assault. Authorities noted that the main intention of the assailants appeared to be to kill, given the brutality of the attack. The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending postmortem examinations as investigations continue.
No arrests had been made by Friday, and the motive of the killing remains unknown. The incident has left the local community shaken, with villagers demanding answers and justice for the slain couple.
The Taita Taveta killings add to a growing trend of violent murders across the country in recent days. In Nyahururu, Laikipia County, the body of 40-year-old George Waititu was discovered in Manguo Swamp with multiple injuries to the head, apparently inflicted with a blunt object. Investigators suspect foul play but are yet to establish a motive.
Elsewhere in the Tarassa area of Tana River County, another grisly murder was reported in Katsangani village. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Harrison Masha Kalume, was found dead in his house with deep cuts to the head, neck, and both hands. Like the other incidents, the motive remains unclear.
Authorities have raised concerns about the rising number of murder cases in the affected areas. Many of the killings have been linked to disputes over land, but in several cases, the reasons remain a mystery. Residents are calling for tighter security and swift investigations to curb the violence.
