A three-year-old boy tragically lost his life after a motorcycle tipped over and trapped him in the compound of a church in Buuri, Meru County. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the boy accompanied his mother, who was employed to clean the church, to the compound.
According to the police, the mother had left her son under the care of a church caretaker while she went about her duties. However, the caretaker left the boy unattended, allowing him to wander around the compound alone. The boy then spotted a parked motorcycle and, out of curiosity, attempted to climb onto it, mimicking a mock ride.
Sadly, the motorcycle, which was heavy due to the fuel in it, tipped over and fell on the boy. Being small and unable to support the weight of the vehicle, he was trapped underneath it. The boy was alone when this happened, and the church member, who had come for prayers, noticed the fallen motorcycle leaking fuel. Upon informing the mother about the situation, she quickly rushed over to help raise the motorcycle and clean the area.
It was at this point that they discovered the boy had been trapped beneath the motorcycle and was unresponsive. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police have confirmed that this was a tragic accident and have launched an investigation into the incident.
In another unfortunate accident, a four-year-old boy from Marimanti, Tharaka Nithi County, was killed after being run over by a reversing lorry. The driver of the lorry stated that he was backing up to load hay when the young boy unexpectedly appeared from a nearby house and was struck. The child died instantly, and the body was taken to the mortuary for further investigation.
Additionally, a police officer who was involved in a separate accident in Koru, Kisumu County, succumbed to his injuries on September 30, following the incident on September 29.
These recent accidents highlight the ongoing issue of fatal accidents in Kenya. More than 4,000 people lose their lives in road-related accidents annually, with countless others suffering from serious injuries that often place a heavy burden on families.
