Police in Eldoret have arrested two suspects after intercepting a vehicle transporting 500 litres of illicit brew.
The operation took place on Monday, September 1, 2025, following a tip-off about a suspicious car believed to be ferrying chang’aa. Acting on the information, officers from Eldoret Police Station mounted a search led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS). They successfully intercepted a Toyota Corolla in the Asis area.
A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered the illicit brew concealed in polythene pouches and plastic bottles. According to police, the alcohol had been carefully packed for transportation and distribution within the region. Both occupants of the car were immediately arrested and taken into custody at Eldoret Police Station, where they are awaiting arraignment in court.
Authorities emphasized that the seizure was part of an ongoing crackdown on the production, distribution, and consumption of illicit alcohol. The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to protecting the health and safety of citizens by dismantling networks involved in the illegal liquor trade.
The arrest comes at a time when the government has intensified efforts to curb the sale of harmful alcoholic drinks across the country. Recently, the Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary announced the formation of a national multi-agency team to spearhead sting operations. This task force brings together key agencies such as the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA).
The new initiative is designed to complement regional and county-level security operations while ensuring strict enforcement of laws governing the manufacture and sale of alcohol. The multi-agency team, coordinated from Nairobi, will be deployed to regions requiring reinforcement in the fight against illicit brews.
The government has assured the public that it will continue to carry out consistent operations until the vice is eliminated. The latest arrest in Eldoret highlights the determination of security agencies to crack down on individuals and networks profiting from illegal alcohol, which poses serious health and social risks to communities.
