Two police officers were hospitalised on Wednesday afternoon following a violent incident during an arrest in Bungoma County. The officers, attached to Namwela police post in Sirisia Sub-County, were attempting to arrest a suspect wanted for malicious damage when the suspect suddenly turned aggressive and bit two of them.
The incident occurred in Stabicha village, where the suspect attacked the officers, biting one on the shoulder and the other on the hand, causing injuries that required urgent medical attention. The officers were initially treated at Kaptenai Dispensary before being referred to Sirisia Sub-County hospital for further care. Police reports confirm that both officers are now in stable condition.
A third officer on the team managed to subdue and detain the suspect, who faces several charges. Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud stated that the suspect will be arraigned on charges of malicious property damage, resisting arrest, and assaulting police officers while on duty.
In a separate development, police in Nyamira County arrested a 33-year-old man found in possession of a toy pistol, police uniforms, handcuffs, a smoke jacket, and a police jungle cap. The suspect’s home in Gakano area, Magombo village, was raided on June 4 following reports of impersonation. The police are currently investigating the origin of the items and the suspect remains in custody pending further questioning and legal action.
Meanwhile, in Kisumu County, a man suspected of attempted theft was lynched by residents in Wanda village, Nyakach Sub-County. The deceased’s body was discovered on the roadside on Wednesday after the attack, marking a grim reminder of the dangers of mob justice.
These incidents highlight the complex challenges police officers face during law enforcement operations, including violent resistance and impersonation cases, as well as the risks posed by community vigilantism. Authorities have appealed to the public to allow due process and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
