Police in Kilifi County have arrested two men after they were found transporting a large consignment of bhang on a motorbike. The operation, carried out during routine patrols, led to the seizure of 26 kilograms of the illegal substance, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking in the coastal region.
According to police accounts, the suspects were intercepted after officers flagged down their motorbike for inspection. Instead of complying, the men attempted to flee the scene, raising suspicions. A brief chase ensued, after which the officers managed to stop the motorbike. Upon searching their belongings, the pillion passenger was discovered carrying a bag loaded with bhang.
The suspects were immediately taken into custody, and the motorbike together with the narcotics was confiscated as exhibits. Authorities say the two men will face charges related to possession and trafficking of narcotic drugs. The case is being processed, and the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are finalized.
Kilifi and other parts of the Coast region have in recent years become hotspots for drug trafficking, raising concerns among local leaders, law enforcement agencies, and residents. The availability of narcotics such as bhang has been linked to increased crime, school dropouts, and rising cases of addiction among young people. Security agencies have therefore intensified patrols and community policing initiatives to curb the spread of illicit drugs.
Police have urged members of the public to continue volunteering information that could help in the fight against drug trafficking. They noted that collaboration between communities and law enforcement remains key to breaking drug supply chains and preventing the youth from falling into addiction.
The latest seizure demonstrates the persistence of drug networks operating in the region despite repeated crackdowns. Authorities have pledged to step up operations and ensure that those involved in the trade face the full force of the law. Meanwhile, the two suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
The arrest serves as a reminder of the challenges Kenya faces in addressing narcotics trade, and the importance of sustained enforcement efforts combined with public awareness campaigns to curb drug abuse and protect vulnerable groups, particularly the youth.
