Two individuals suspected of drug trafficking are on the run following a police operation that led to the interception of a vehicle carrying narcotics in Narok County. The vehicle, which was allegedly transporting bhang from Kisii to Nairobi, was stopped after a dramatic high-speed chase along the busy Narok–Mai Mahiu highway.
The incident unfolded when law enforcement officers from Ntulele in Narok East received intelligence on a vehicle believed to be ferrying illegal drugs. Acting swiftly, they attempted to stop a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado suspected to be involved in the illicit operation. However, the driver defied orders to halt, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit.
The chase continued for several kilometers before the vehicle veered off the highway and onto the Nairegie Enkare feeder road. It was here that the vehicle developed mechanical problems and was abandoned. Taking advantage of the situation, the two occupants managed to escape on foot, disappearing into nearby maize plantations. Despite a search by police officers, the suspects remain at large.
Upon inspecting the abandoned vehicle, officers discovered three large sacks loaded with 600 brooms of bhang. The narcotics, weighing several kilograms, were immediately seized and secured as evidence. The Toyota Land Cruiser was towed to the Ntulele Police Station where it is being held as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the two fugitives, with police expressing confidence that they will be apprehended soon. Investigators are also working to establish the broader network behind the drug trafficking operation, including potential supply routes and other individuals involved.
The bust comes amid growing concern over drug trafficking activities in parts of the country, particularly the use of major highways to transport narcotics between counties. The Narok–Mai Mahiu route, which links the western and central parts of Kenya to Nairobi, is increasingly being monitored due to its strategic significance.
Local residents have raised concerns over the safety of their communities, especially given the suspects’ escape into nearby farms. Security patrols in the area have been intensified as police urge the public to report any suspicious individuals or activities.
The seizure marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb the illegal drug trade, even as law enforcement continues to grapple with syndicates exploiting rural roads and private vehicles to move contraband. Investigations into the case are ongoing, and police say more arrests are expected as leads develop.
