A 25-year-old woman from Kipyosit village in Bomet East Sub-County has been arrested after allegedly hacking her boyfriend to death following a dispute over a mobile phone. The tragic incident has left residents in shock and renewed calls for peaceful conflict resolution within relationships.
Reports indicate that the suspect, identified as Faith Cherono, visited her boyfriend, Emanuel Kiprono, demanding that he return a mobile phone she claimed belonged to her. However, when the boyfriend refused to hand it over, a heated argument ensued between the two.
According to local police, the disagreement quickly escalated, prompting the couple to leave the house and head towards the nearby Mau Forest. It was there that Cherono is alleged to have attacked Kiprono using a Maasai sword, striking him at the back of the head before fleeing the scene.
The victim’s body was later discovered by police officers at the scene, bearing a deep cut wound to the back of the head. His remains were taken to Tenwek Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
After committing the act, the suspect reportedly fled across the county border into Narok, where she later surrendered herself to police officers at Tendwet Police Station in Narok South. She was later transferred into the custody of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for further interrogation and legal processing.
The shocking incident has drawn strong condemnation from local leaders and residents, who have described it as yet another tragic case of gender-based violence. Bomet Woman Representative Linet Chepkorir emphasized the need for community awareness and intervention to curb the rising number of domestic-related killings.
She urged families and couples to seek peaceful methods of resolving disputes instead of resorting to violence, warning that anger and emotional confrontations continue to destroy homes and claim lives. Chepkorir called for the strengthening of family values and community-based support systems that can help address underlying causes of domestic conflict, such as mistrust, infidelity, and economic stress.
The killing highlights a growing concern over the increasing cases of relationship-related violence in the region, with authorities urging residents to report early signs of conflict before they escalate into tragedy. Investigations into the case are ongoing as police prepare to charge the suspect with murder.
