A tragic road accident in Athi River, Machakos County, has left a young woman dead and renewed concerns over road safety in the area.
The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday evening along the Devki–Makadara Road near Pepe stage. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Joyline Jemaiyo Kipkorir, was a passenger on a motorcycle when the incident unfolded.
According to police reports, the motorcycle, ridden by a 30-year-old man, collided with a trailer at around 6:10 pm. Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcycle attempted to overtake the trailer on the left side of the road. However, it hit a bump, causing the rider to lose control.
The impact threw Kipkorir off the motorcycle, sending her under the trailer’s wheels. She died instantly at the scene of the accident. The body was later moved to the Shalom Community Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination. Both the motorcycle and the trailer were towed to the Athi River Police Station for inspection as part of ongoing investigations.
Authorities have continued to warn road users about the dangers of overtaking on the wrong side and the risks posed by road bumps, particularly on busy stretches such as the Devki–Makadara Road. The incident has reignited calls for heightened awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of traffic rules to curb rising fatalities involving motorcycles.
In a separate incident in Athi River Sub-County, two men sustained serious injuries following a mob attack in Katani location on the same day. The attack, reported at around 3:00 pm, involved members of the public who confronted the duo on suspicion of wrongdoing while they were riding a blue Honda motorcycle.
The victims were assaulted with crude weapons, sustaining multiple injuries that left them unable to speak. Emergency responders rushed them to Kenyatta National Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The motorcycle involved in the attack was impounded at Mavoko Police Station as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the assault continue. Authorities have urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to instead report suspected criminal activity to law enforcement officers.
Both incidents highlight growing safety concerns in Athi River, with residents and leaders alike calling for greater vigilance on the roads and within communities.
