Residents of Samoget village in Bomet East Sub-county are reeling in shock after a tragic incident in which a 25-year-old woman allegedly hacked her boyfriend to death following a heated disagreement over a mobile phone.
According to local reports, the suspect, identified as Faith Cherono, is said to have gone to her boyfriend’s house on Tuesday to demand the return of a mobile phone she claimed belonged to her. The man, 33-year-old Emanuel Kiprono, reportedly refused to hand it over, leading to an argument that briefly escalated before the couple agreed to settle the matter later in the day.
Witnesses later saw the two walking together toward the nearby Mau Forest area, suggesting they may have been attempting to reconcile or continue discussing the matter privately. However, police investigations have since revealed that the situation took a violent turn once they reached the forest.
It is alleged that Cherono attacked Kiprono from behind, striking him on the back of the head with a sharp sword. The fatal blow is believed to have caused instant death. After the attack, the suspect fled the scene, crossing over into neighboring Narok County.
Reports indicate that Cherono later surrendered herself to officers at Tendwet Police Station in Narok, where she confessed to committing the act. Police officers from Bomet East Sub-county visited the crime scene and recovered Kiprono’s lifeless body, which bore a deep cut wound on the back of the head.
The body was taken to Tenwek Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination, while the murder weapon is believed to have been left at the scene as part of the evidence. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
Authorities have confirmed that Cherono is currently in custody and will remain detained as detectives complete their inquiries. Preliminary findings suggest that jealousy and mistrust related to the mobile phone might have contributed to the violent outcome.
Community leaders have condemned the killing, urging couples to seek peaceful ways of resolving domestic disagreements instead of resorting to violence. The incident has once again highlighted the growing concern over rising cases of domestic disputes turning fatal in rural areas across Kenya.
