Police officers in Mumias East have arrested seven individuals suspected to be part of a notorious criminal group known as Jeshi Jinga. The arrests followed a tip-off from residents who assisted authorities in identifying some of the suspected members.
According to the police, two members of the group were first apprehended after being spotted by vigilant locals. Following interrogation, the suspects led officers to five other members, one of whom was arrested while smoking bhang at his home during the day. Among the suspects is a 17-year-old boy, reportedly a student who had recently been suspended from school for indiscipline.
Investigations revealed that the group often operates at night, disguising themselves in black jackets as they terrorise residents. Officers also recovered a range of crude weapons during the operation, including pangas, clubs, slashers, knives, sharpened metal rods, bright torches, and the signature black jackets worn during their activities.
Authorities also arrested a woman believed to play a key role in the gang’s operations. She allegedly poses as a pillion passenger to lure unsuspecting boda boda riders. Once the rider stops to pick her up, other gang members emerge from their hideouts, overpower the rider, and escape with the motorbike.
Police further revealed that besides Jeshi Jinga, another criminal network is active in the area, specializing in cattle theft. Investigations led them to a young man suspected of being a habitual cattle thief. His parents confirmed that he is rarely seen during the day but is often away at night.
Security officers have warned that they will continue with intensified patrols to flush out gang members and curb rising insecurity in the area. Parents were urged to be more vigilant about their children’s behavior and the company they keep, as many of those arrested were youths.
Police also issued a stern warning against disco matanga events, which they said provide cover for criminal gangs to roam freely and engage in unlawful activities. The crackdown is part of a wider operation aimed at restoring safety and order within the community.
