Member Files Petition to Expel Cleophas Malala as UDA Secretary General

Cleophas Malala, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General, faces potential expulsion following a petition filed by a founding member of the party. The petition, spanning four pages, accuses Malala of defying party leadership and fostering divisions within the UDA.

The petitioner, identified as Wabwire, outlined seven key reasons for Malala’s removal, citing embezzlement of UDA funds, violations of the party constitution, and concerns over Malala’s character and educational background. Emphasizing the party’s foundational principles, Wabwire stated, “As UDA founders, we shall strive to remind our members where we came from, why we formed this party, and where we intend to go with it. This is why it is sometimes, such as it is now, important to remind us of the history of the UDA Party.”

Wabwire stressed the need for strict adherence to the party’s objectives, warning that any attempts to deviate from these goals would warrant severe consequences. He further proposed formal leadership and orientation programs for new officials to maintain the party’s integrity and prominence.

Malala, appointed as UDA Secretary-General in February 2023, has been at the center of political controversies recently. At the end of May, he issued a stern warning to Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, addressing their political rhetoric and reports of internal conflicts. These reports suggested that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was being marginalized within the UDA and had strained relations with President William Ruto.

In his statement, Malala highlighted a growing trend of indiscipline within the party, urging members to respect party leadership and maintain unity. “Your recent conduct not only undermines the party’s unity but also disrespects the leadership that you pledged to serve. Let this be a stern warning: desist from such actions with immediate effect. Should this behaviour persist, the party will take disciplinary action against you,” Malala asserted.

The petition and ensuing controversies have raised questions about Malala’s future within the UDA and the party’s internal dynamics. As the situation unfolds, the UDA’s response to these allegations and the potential expulsion of its Secretary General will be closely watched by political observers and party members alike.
