India’s naval presence in the Indian Ocean continues to expand, with the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sachet docking at the port of Mombasa for a goodwill visit between September 17 and 21, 2025. The port call is part of a wider deployment to three African countries, underscoring India’s growing engagement with the continent in maritime security and defence.
The visit reflects the close and cordial ties between India and Kenya as maritime neighbours, while also strengthening regional safety and security. During the stay, personnel from both nations’ coast guards will take part in a range of professional interactions, ship visits, and friendly sports exchanges. These activities are designed to build trust, enhance interoperability, and deepen operational understanding between the two sides.
Kenya’s Coast Guard has emphasized that the arrival of Sachet sets the stage for joint exercises and professional exchanges that will foster greater collaboration. The highlight of the visit will include a passage exercise alongside Kenya’s Coast Guard vessel MV Doria. Such exercises are expected to improve coordination and readiness for joint operations, particularly in tackling maritime challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, and environmental threats.
ICGS Sachet represents a modern addition to India’s maritime assets. It is the first in a series of five 105-metre Offshore Patrol Vessels constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited. Equipped with advanced systems and machinery, the vessel can operate Advanced Light Helicopters and carry Pollution Response equipment. It is also fitted with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, making it capable of handling a broad spectrum of missions ranging from search and rescue to environmental protection and coastal defence.
As part of the visit, a deck reception will be hosted on board Sachet, with Kenya’s Coast Guard leadership in attendance. The ship will also open its doors to Mombasa residents on Sunday morning, offering the public a rare opportunity to tour the vessel and learn more about maritime operations.
Following its engagement in Kenya, ICGS Sachet will continue its deployment to Cape Town, South Africa. The stopover in Mombasa forms part of India’s broader efforts to strengthen defence partnerships with African nations. Recent years have seen joint training exercises, high-level visits, and growing cooperation in naval and coast guard operations.
India and Kenya’s deepening maritime partnership highlights the strategic importance of the Western Indian Ocean in regional security, trade, and defence diplomacy.
