The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has confirmed that the Nakuru-bound carriageway along the Nakuru–Eldoret (A8) Road has been reopened after receiving safety clearance. This follows an incident where a sinkhole had developed near the Eveready Roundabout, forcing the closure of the road.
KeNHA assured the public that the road is now safe and free from any geological threats. Engineers worked swiftly to restore normal traffic flow, and the authority will continue to monitor upstream conditions for any further concerns. Despite the reopening, motorists are advised to be cautious and adhere to safety guidelines as the monitoring continues.
The sinkhole incident, which led to a temporary disruption of traffic, highlights the vulnerability of the region, especially Nakuru Town West, which is prone to such occurrences. Local officials explained that the area is situated on volcanic bedrock that is prone to cavities and fissures, making sinkholes a recurrent problem. In fact, earlier this year, another section of the Nakuru-Kabarak road had to be closed due to a similar sinkhole formation caused by heavy rains.
While the latest closure has been resolved, the authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the situation to ensure the ongoing safety of all road users.
