A man was arrested at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after he was reportedly planning to carry out a mass shooting at the world’s busiest airport. The suspect, Billy Joe Cagle, 49, of Cartersville, Georgia, was apprehended following a tip from his family. They had seen Cagle discussing his plans on social media, where he openly stated his intent to attack the airport with an assault rifle.
The family’s quick action prompted local police to investigate, and they found an AR-15 rifle with 27 rounds of ammunition in Cagle’s truck, which was parked just outside the terminal. Cagle, a convicted felon, had arrived at the airport earlier in the day in a Chevrolet pickup truck. After entering the airport, he was seen approaching the TSA security checkpoint, drawing attention due to his suspicious behavior.
Authorities were alerted by Cagle’s family members who feared for his well-being. They provided police with a photograph of him, which was used by officers to identify and apprehend him. Surveillance footage from the airport and body-camera footage from the arrest showed officers confronting Cagle and taking him into custody. During the arrest, Cagle was heard shouting and resisting.
He now faces multiple charges, including making terroristic threats, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Additionally, Cagle is being charged with possessing a firearm despite being prohibited due to his criminal record. He is currently being held at the Clayton County Detention Facility, and authorities are working to determine how he obtained the gun.
Cagle’s actions were reportedly influenced by his struggles with mental health issues, as he had shared on social media that he was schizophrenic and taking medication. His high school friend, who had been in contact with him shortly before the incident, expressed shock, stating that Cagle was well-liked in his community and had no history of violence.
This arrest is being hailed as a success in preventing a potential tragedy. Law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of public vigilance, noting that the timely tip from Cagle’s family was crucial in averting a disaster. The mayor of Atlanta and Homeland Security officials also expressed relief and gratitude, emphasizing the role of good information and quick response in protecting the public from harm.
