Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, the Nairobi hawker who was critically injured during the June 17 protests, has died. His passing was confirmed Monday afternoon at 3:15 p.m., following over a week in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Kariuki had been on life support after sustaining a close-range gunshot wound to the head during a police operation to disperse protestors along Mondlane Street in the Nairobi Central Business District. His condition had deteriorated significantly, and he was declared brain-dead late Saturday night, prompting his family to prepare for the worst.
According to hospital staff, Kariuki’s condition remained critical throughout his stay in the ICU. Despite surgical efforts and continuous monitoring, his injuries proved fatal. His family has confirmed the death and indicated that further details, including funeral arrangements, will be shared in due course.
The incident that led to Kariuki’s shooting was captured on video, drawing widespread outrage and prompting investigations into the conduct of the officers involved. The footage, which quickly circulated on social media, showed the moment officers confronted and allegedly shot the unarmed vendor as he attempted to flee the chaos of the protest.
Two police officers, Klinzy Barasa Masinde and Duncan Kiprono, were arrested in connection with the shooting. They are currently in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station. Initially detained on June 19, the officers are being held for 15 days as investigations continue, with potential murder charges looming.
Authorities are actively pursuing a comprehensive investigation. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had initially requested 21 additional days to conclude forensic and ballistic tests. These include ballistic analysis of the officers’ firearms, forensic examination of the shooting scene, review of CCTV footage, and analysis of physical evidence gathered at the site. Additionally, investigators plan to gather witness statements, though Kariuki was unable to speak prior to his passing.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is also involved in the probe, overseeing the legality and accountability of the officers’ actions. Public interest in the case has surged, with many demanding justice for Kariuki and greater police accountability during public demonstrations.
Kariuki’s death adds to growing concerns about the use of excessive force by law enforcement during protests. His case has become emblematic of the risks faced by ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire during demonstrations.
As the investigation continues, human rights groups, civic leaders, and community members are expected to follow the developments closely, pressing for transparency and justice in the wake of Kariuki’s tragic death.
