Tension erupted in Nairobi’s CBD as artists Arrow Bwoy and Khaligraph Jones were caught up in chaotic scenes during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations. The duo had joined scores of Kenyans to honour victims of last year’s protests, only to face police brutality firsthand.
A video circulating on social media shows a visibly unarmed Arrow Bwoy and Khaligraph Jones walking peacefully as police trailed them. The Mazishi hitmaker was dressed in a full-body navy-blue jacket, concealing most of his identity. Despite the non-violent atmosphere, police officers lobbed tear gas toward the pair and others nearby. As the smoke spread, an officer was captured whipping Arrow on his lower back, prompting him to raise his hands in surrender.
Khaligraph, seen attempting to shield his colleague, told the police, “I’m with him,” while urging Arrow to move ahead. But moments later, the situation escalated. Khaligraph bolted from the tear gas while Arrow walked in the opposite direction, taking the hit from the officer.
The footage ignited anger across social media. Kenyans expressed shock at the unnecessary force used on peaceful demonstrators, particularly artists who were using their platforms to advocate for change. Many voiced frustration that those meant to protect the public were instead turning violent on civilians.
Amid the uproar, singer Nadia Mukami broke her silence. Though she had earlier stated she wouldn’t physically attend the protests due to her pregnancy, she had affirmed her solidarity with fellow Kenyans. In a previous message, she shared her support for the movement while highlighting her condition: “This year, due to my current situation, I am not in a position to join Kenyans on the street!! But I am still here with you guys. Let us remember, we are the ones we have been waiting for! The future is now.”
After witnessing the video of Arrow Bwoy being whipped, Nadia was furious. Taking to her social platforms, she lashed out at the authorities for attacking her partner. “Msishike baba watoto wangu! Nimejam ata!” she exclaimed, demanding an end to the senseless violence. She emphasized her anger, calling out the police’s unprovoked aggression and stating that enough is enough.
Kenyans rallied behind her, echoing calls for justice. Comments flooded in, condemning the police’s actions and expressing deep disappointment. Some questioned why tear gas was used when there was no violence. Others pointed out the irony of harming artists who were peacefully protesting alongside citizens.
Meanwhile, Khaligraph also responded to the incident. Though shaken, he remained resolute in his stance against police brutality and in support of justice for the fallen and oppressed. His statement further fueled public calls for reform and accountability.
The incident adds to a growing list of reports highlighting excessive force used during peaceful protests. As the Finance Bill continues to stir national debate, more prominent figures are speaking out, demanding better governance and the protection of constitutional rights. Arrow Bwoy’s assault by the police has become another reminder of the challenges faced by those fighting for change in Kenya.
