Norway international Andreas Schjelderup is facing conviction in Denmark after admitting to illegally sharing a video from his time with Danish club Nordsjaelland. The 21-year-old Benfica winger described the incident as a “stupid mistake” made when he was 19, acknowledging his wrongdoing and expressing deep remorse for his actions.
In a public statement, Schjelderup explained that what he did was both illegal and morally wrong. He apologised to those affected by the video, as well as to his family, teammates, and fans. The winger said he had been in shock since learning of the investigation, adding that this was the first time he had ever been involved with the police. He stated that the offence did not reflect his true character and that he was ready to face the legal consequences.
Although the exact contents of the video have not been officially confirmed, reports suggest it involved two young men in an old-quality recording that Schjelderup shared without thinking. Danish authorities charged him with possessing or distributing sexual material involving individuals under the age of 18. The player confirmed his cooperation with the police and revealed that he expects a conviction soon, likely resulting in a suspended sentence.
Norway national team coach Stale Solbakken has publicly supported the young winger, saying he has taken full responsibility for an “incredibly foolish act.” Solbakken emphasised that Schjelderup has learned from the experience and deserves support during this challenging time. Benfica president Rui Costa also expressed the club’s commitment to standing by the player.
The news arrives at a crucial time for Norway, who are close to securing their first World Cup qualification since 1998. Schjelderup admitted the timing was unfortunate and regretted the distraction it may cause the national team ahead of key qualifiers against Estonia and Italy. Despite the controversy, he reaffirmed his dedication to moving forward responsibly and urged others not to share or view harmful or offensive content online.
