Southern China is grappling with severe weather as relentless torrential rains continue to lash the region, leading to flash flooding and mudslides that have put millions at risk. Tens of thousands of people have already been evacuated, with the threat of further displacement looming large.
Since June 9, at least 13 people have lost their lives due to the extreme weather, according to Chinese state media reports on Friday. Dramatic footage has emerged showing urban areas submerged in water and buildings subsiding, while emergency responders in speedboats work tirelessly to rescue stranded residents.
One of the hardest-hit areas is the city of Meizhou in Guangdong province, where at least nine deaths have been reported. The flooding along the Songyuan and Shiku rivers has reached record levels, exacerbating the crisis.
The situation remains dire as weather forecasts predict continued heavy rains, raising concerns over additional flooding and the safety of those in affected areas. Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines as rescue operations and relief efforts continue.
