Sharon Lokedi Replaces Brigid Kosgei in Paris Olympic Marathon Team

Sharon Lokedi, the 2022 New York City marathon champion, has been named as the replacement for Brigid Kosgei in the women’s marathon team for the Paris Olympics. Kosgei, the former marathon world record holder, withdrew from the team due to an injury, as confirmed by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K).

According to a communique from NOC-K, Kosgei’s injury, detected during a training session and subsequently reviewed by the medical team led by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ondiege, necessitated her withdrawal from the Paris Olympics. This development paved the way for Lokedi, who also clinched a silver medal in this year’s Boston Marathon, to step into the spotlight alongside defending champion Peres Jepchirchir and two-time Boston Marathon winner Hellen Obiri.

Lokedi, known for her impressive performance in the New York City marathon where she triumphed as champion, brings a blend of experience and recent success to the Kenyan team. Her inclusion underscores Kenya’s depth in long-distance running and highlights her readiness to compete at the highest level of international athletics.

The women’s marathon team, now comprising Jepchirchir, Obiri, and Lokedi, represents a formidable lineup poised to challenge for top honors at the Paris Olympics. Their event is scheduled for the 11th of next month, marking the culmination of their rigorous preparations and the pinnacle of their athletic careers thus far.
