Kenya’s Harambee Stars pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over two-time African Nations Championship (CHAN) winners Morocco at a packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The win, achieved despite playing nearly half the match with 10 men, has put Kenya on the brink of the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals, with even a draw in their next match potentially securing progression.
The build-up to the match was chaotic, as thousands of fans, frustrated by long queues and ticket delays, stormed gates and climbed perimeter fences to gain entry. Inside the stadium, order was eventually restored, and the atmosphere reached fever pitch as the match kicked off.
Morocco dominated early possession and came close to scoring in the seventh minute when Mo Ait Khalid’s fierce shot hit the post after a poor clearance by the Kenyan defence. Kenya responded with fast counterattacks, testing the Moroccan backline. Controversy struck in the 17th minute when Kenyan appeals for a penalty after a suspected handball were waved away by the referee.
The breakthrough came in the 41st minute. Ryan Wesley Ogam cut inside onto his left foot and drilled a low shot into the bottom right corner, sending the home crowd into raptures. However, Kenya’s momentum was checked just before halftime when Chrispine Erambo was sent off after VAR deemed his studs-up challenge dangerous.
In the second half, Morocco introduced attacking reinforcements and pressed hard. Kenya had a brief moment of hope when Boniface Muchiri was fouled in the area, but VAR overturned the penalty decision. From then on, it was relentless Moroccan pressure against a disciplined Kenyan defence.
Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi produced several outstanding saves, including a spectacular stop to deny Imad Riahi’s curling shot. Mike Kibwage led the backline with authority, while Sylvester Owino made vital interventions to frustrate Morocco’s attack.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Kenya’s organisation, grit, and tactical discipline held firm until the final whistle. The victory not only boosts their quarterfinal hopes but also showcases the team’s growing maturity under pressure.
The Harambee Stars will now look to build on this momentum in their final group game, knowing that their fate is firmly in their own hands. This result will be remembered as one of Kenya’s most spirited performances on the continental stage.
