AC Milan players will wear their maternal surnames on their kits for their upcoming match against Bologna, a gesture marking the celebration of Mother’s Day. The initiative is part of an effort to honor the vital role of mothers and raise awareness about equal parental naming rights in Italy. The club is using the occasion to highlight the significance of both maternal and paternal contributions to a child’s identity.
This tradition is an homage to a historical practice, and AC Milan has decided to reinstate it as a tribute to the upcoming Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, May 11. The maternal surnames will be displayed not only on the players’ jerseys but also in other elements of the matchday experience, including the official lineup announcements and the San Siro’s giant screens. Stadium presenters will also mention the maternal surnames during the game.
The initiative, however, is not just about recognition. It is also about supporting a charitable cause. AC Milan’s foundation, Fondazione Milan, is backing a campaign to help 70 teenage mothers through a fundraising effort. The funds will go to a parenting support program operated at the Spazio Indifesa Hub in the Gallaratese district of Milan. The Hub, which opened in 2021 with support from the foundation, provides critical services to young mothers in need. The project is run in collaboration with Terre des Hommes, an organization focused on the protection and support of children.
As part of the fundraising campaign, the proceeds from the auction of match-worn shirts and unique mascot experiences will contribute to supporting these young mothers. Additionally, a portion of the sales from the club’s new Women’s Collection and tickets to the Mondo Milan Museum, available both online and in physical stores, will also be directed toward the initiative.
AC Milan had launched a similar initiative last year, which aimed to raise awareness of a social issue that has become a topic of debate in Italy the push for equal naming rights for both parents. This campaign brought attention to the fact that Italian law traditionally favors fathers when it comes to naming children, a practice that many believe should be updated to allow mothers equal say in the naming process.
As for the match itself, AC Milan is focused on securing a win against Bologna. Currently sitting in 9th place with 57 points, they are 20 points behind leaders Napoli. A victory in this match would not only support the club’s charitable efforts but also boost their position in the league standings as they strive for a more competitive finish to the season.
The heartwarming initiative represents a strong blend of football and social responsibility, and AC Milan’s decision to commemorate Mother’s Day in such a meaningful way will likely resonate with fans and players alike. It highlights the club’s commitment to supporting both its community and broader social causes, while also enhancing the matchday experience for all involved.
