AFC Leopards will be aiming to kick off the 2025/2026 FKF Premier League season with victory when they face Sofapaka at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards are entering a new era under the leadership of chairman Boniface Ambani and head coach Fred Ambani, who both featured as strikers during the club’s last league title triumph in 1998. Their joint ambition now is to restore the Ingwe roar by ending a 27-year league title drought.
Leopards Banking on New Arrivals
The Leopards have been one of the busiest teams in the transfer market, bringing in 10 new players to strengthen their squad. Notable signings include James Kinyanjui from KCB, Tyson Otieno from Kenya Police, Elias Mugane from Fortune Sacco, and Malian defender Rami Coulibaly from Chabab Alam Tanger. The new arrivals have blended well with the squad, delivering impressive results in pre-season matches.
Coach Fred Ambani has expressed confidence that the team is ready not only for the opening fixture but also for a serious title charge. He emphasized the importance of fans’ support and unity as a driving force behind their push for glory. “The players are prepared to give their all, and with consistent support, we can bring the trophy back,” he said ahead of the clash.
Sofapaka’s Rebuild Underway
Their opponents Sofapaka will be looking to build on their positive run from last season. Despite losing key players including veteran midfielder Humphrey Mieno and striker Edward Omondi, they have bolstered their squad with 21 new signings. Among them is Stephen Bonney from Rwanda’s Vision FC, who is expected to add fresh energy to the team. Coach Ezekiel Akwana will be keen to see how quickly the new-look squad gels in competitive action.
Sharks Lock Horns with Bandari
Elsewhere in Nairobi, Kariobangi Sharks will begin their season against Bandari FC at Kasarani Annex in an early kick-off. Sharks are known for fast starts to their campaigns, although they often lose momentum midway due to player departures to bigger clubs. Starting strong against Bandari would give them the boost they need to sustain their form deeper into the season.
Both fixtures promise to set the tone for what is expected to be one of the most competitive FKF Premier League campaigns in recent years. For Leopards, it is not just about winning their opener – it is about reigniting belief that their long wait for league glory could finally be nearing its end
