Lewis Bandi says pulling on the Harambee Stars shirt still feels surreal after being named in Benni McCarthy’s 25-man travelling group heading to Arusha for the CECAFA Four Nations warm-up ahead of CHAN 2024. Speaking at the team’s Kasarani training base, the AFC Leopards vice-captain called the selection “a huge privilege” and vowed to seize the opportunity.
Bandi, who made his senior debut for Kenya last June in a 2-1 win over Chad in Morocco, is vying for minutes at right-back against Kenya Police defender Daniel Sakari. His ambidexterity and comfort on either flank – plus experience stepping into midfield when required – could expand McCarthy’s tactical options as tournament preparations intensify.
“The mood in camp is fantastic,” Bandi said, noting how cohesion improves with every session. He is adamant that any player fortunate enough to receive a national call-up must “take advantage and represent the country well.” The defender also hailed McCarthy’s breadth of experience, believing the coach’s career at the top level can accelerate Kenya’s growth.
Kenya’s tune-up in Tanzania will pit the Stars against Uganda, Congo Brazzaville, and the hosts. The competitive reps are designed to harden the squad before CHAN, where Kenya will stage all Group A fixtures at Kasarani Stadium. The opener is slated for 4 August against DR Congo, a matchup already circled in the dressing room.
As co-hosts with Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya will feel expectation but also home energy when CHAN kicks off in Nairobi. Bandi says fierce competition across the 25-man squad is sharpening standards daily ahead of a demanding Group A.
Bandi’s rise captures the pathway available to determined local talent. Raised in Hamza, Makadara, he sharpened his game in the Makadara Junior League before turning out for Hakati FC and Jericho All Stars. A move into the AFC Leopards youth ranks followed, and by 2020 he had broken into the senior side, debuting versus KCB FC. His reliability across multiple positions helped propel him into the club leadership group; today he serves as vice-captain and on-field tone-setter for Ingwe.
With national duty calling and a major continental showcase on the horizon, Bandi wants his journey to remind young Kenyan players that humility, hard work, and readiness can open doors. If he grabs his chance, he could anchor both club and country in a pivotal season.
