Aldrine Kibet has finally broken his silence following the confirmation of his impending move to Spanish La Liga club Celta Vigo, marking a defining moment in his young football career. The 18-year-old midfielder is on the brink of completing a dream transfer to one of Spain’s most competitive clubs, in a deal reportedly worth €6 million (Ksh 864 million).
Kibet’s move from Nastic Sports Academy to the Spanish top-flight has generated excitement across Kenya. His rise from local school competitions to European football has been swift and impressive. Kibet first caught national attention in August 2023 during the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports national championships, where he scored seven goals, including a brace in the final, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
He later joined Nastic Academy in September 2023, a move that proved crucial in shaping his development. His star continued to shine on the international stage when he netted five goals during the CECAFA U20 qualifiers in October 2024, helping Kenya qualify for the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations. Although he didn’t score in the tournament itself, his flair, technical skill, and tactical awareness left a lasting impression.
Now, with a move to Celta Vigo nearly complete, Kibet shared an inspirational message on social media: “Aldrine, your moment to fly high has arrived. New direction, new challenge… Let’s go!” The post marked his first public reaction since the news of the deal broke, giving fans a glimpse into his determination and excitement.
His father confirmed they were in Spain to finalize the transfer, saying the official signing was imminent. If completed, this move will see Kibet follow in the footsteps of Benni McCarthy, who played for Celta Vigo between 1999 and 2001, and other notable African players who have succeeded in La Liga.
Celta Vigo, established in 1923 and based in Vigo, Galicia, is known for its rich footballing culture and vibrant fan base. The club finished seventh in the 2024-25 La Liga season, earning a Europa League spot under head coach Claudio Giráldez. They play their home matches at the Estadio Abanca Balaídos, which holds nearly 25,000 fans.
Kibet’s journey to La Liga signifies a new chapter for Kenyan football, as more homegrown talents make their mark on the global stage.
