Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, once dubbed the “Guernsey Grealish,” is ready to make his mark on the senior England football team after a breakthrough season. Scott’s tactical evolution from a free-roaming attacking midfielder at Bristol City to a disciplined No. 8 at Bournemouth has earned him his first call-up to the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.
At just 22, Scott is set to become only the third Channel Islander to represent England at senior level, following in the footsteps of Matt Le Tissier and Graeme Le Saux. His island upbringing on Guernsey is a key part of his identity, shaping his fearless mentality—a trait he credits to the challenges faced by islanders in accessing mainland opportunities. This mindset helped Scott persevere through setbacks in his career, particularly after being released by Southampton and Bournemouth’s academy in his youth. A move back to Guernsey allowed him to rediscover his love for football, and at just 16, he played men’s football for Guernsey FC in the eighth tier before being spotted by Bristol City, leading to a professional career.
Scott’s journey has not been without its hurdles. Injuries, including a knee problem that sidelined him for four months in 2024, have tested his resolve. However, his resilience has paid off. His excellent form in the Premier League this season, coupled with his strong performances for the under-21s in the European Championships, have earned him a place in the senior squad.
Now, as he aims to take his chance in the senior team, Scott’s focus is on continuing his brave, adventurous play, one that has defined his career so far. While his role in the squad is primarily as a No. 8, Scott is keen to prove he can contribute at the highest level, despite the challenge of competing with established stars like Declan Rice.
Off the field, Scott is supported by his close-knit family, including his stepsister, Maya Le Tissier, who plays for the England women’s team. Her success has been a source of inspiration and advice as Scott steps into the senior England fold. With the islander mentality driving him, Scott is determined to make the most of this opportunity and to continue making those who have supported him proud.
