Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango has opened up on his ultimate ambition after a stellar outing for Harambee Stars at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The talented midfielder was one of Kenya’s standout performers during the tournament, scooping two man-of-the-match awards against DR Congo and Madagascar. His all-action performances helped Harambee Stars reach the quarterfinals of the competition, marking their best-ever showing at the continental event.
Onyango’s displays not only earned him recognition on the pitch but also transformed his life off it. With prize money totaling five million shillings, he admitted the experience was lifechanging and a turning point in his career. His fine form was further rewarded with a senior national team call-up for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Seychelles, both set to be staged at Kasarani Stadium.
Reflecting on his awards, the Kakamega High School alumnus described the experience as unforgettable. “It was a fantastic feeling considering it was the first time we were taking part in the tournament. To be named man of the match twice was an honor that will live long in my memory,” he said.
Born and raised in Makongeni, Onyango believes his success is an inspiration to young players from his neighborhood. “For me, if I can stand out on such a stage, then it tells every kid back home that they too can make it. It is motivating for other boys coming from Makongeni because they know it is possible.”
He also praised the spirit of unity that Harambee Stars built during the tournament and highlighted the support from the government, which played a key role in lifting the team’s morale. The allowances and bonuses promised and delivered by the president gave the players belief and determination to represent the country with pride.
Despite his growing reputation, Onyango remains loyal to Gor Mahia but admitted that his long-term vision lies beyond Kenyan football. His dream is to test himself at the highest level in Europe.
“I am committed to Gor Mahia and still on a contract with them, but ultimately, I want to one day play in La Liga or the English Premier League. Competing with and against the very best would crown everything I’ve been working towards.”
