Manchester United legend Andy Cole has expressed confidence in Benni McCarthy’s ability to elevate Kenyan football as the new head coach of Harambee Stars. During his recent visit to Kenya, Cole took part in a football clinic at Nairobi’s Galaxy Football Academy, where he coached 70 young players. He also joined Manchester United fans for a watchalong of the Manchester derby later that weekend.
Cole, who has visited Kenya multiple times before, spoke highly of his experiences in the country, praising the warm reception he received from the local people. He reflected on his excitement for the future and expressed his gratitude for being able to return and interact with Kenyan football fans.
When asked about McCarthy’s appointment as Harambee Stars’ head coach, Cole emphasized the South African’s credentials. He highlighted McCarthy’s successful playing career in Europe, including his victory in the UEFA Champions League, and his recent coaching role as an assistant at Manchester United. Cole noted that he has known McCarthy for years and believes the tactician’s experience both on and off the pitch makes him well-suited to lead Kenya’s national team. He expressed his belief that McCarthy’s extensive football knowledge and background will help Harambee Stars reach new heights.
Cole also discussed the growth of African football, citing the increasing strength of the continent’s leagues and players. He mentioned that while Kenya has yet to see many of its players break into top European leagues, the key for aspiring footballers is to continue working hard and striving for excellence, much like the successful African players now making a mark in Europe.
Reflecting on his trip to Kenya, Cole praised the country’s vibrant football scene and the passion of its people. He noted the hospitality and warmth he has always experienced during his visits, making his time in Kenya particularly memorable.
With a decorated playing career, Cole remains one of the top goal-scorers in Premier League history, having scored 187 goals. His football expertise, combined with his appreciation for African football, makes his endorsement of McCarthy’s appointment all the more significant as Kenya looks to progress under the new coach’s leadership.
