Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has been arrested on an attempted murder charge following a shooting incident that occurred in Miami earlier this year. The 37-year-old former football star was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and later transported to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is being held pending extradition to Florida.
According to law enforcement reports, the charges stem from a shooting that took place on May 16 after a celebrity boxing event in Miami. Investigators allege that Brown became involved in a heated altercation with another man, identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu. During the confrontation, Brown allegedly took a firearm from a security staff member and fired two shots at Nantambu. One of the bullets reportedly grazed the victim’s neck before he managed to flee the scene.
The arrest warrant outlines that the incident occurred shortly after a physical fight between the two men earlier that evening. Authorities have stated that Brown fled the United States following the shooting and had been residing in Dubai, where he frequently shared social media posts over the past few months. It remains unclear how long he had been in the country or the circumstances surrounding his return to U.S. custody.
If convicted of second-degree attempted murder, Brown could face a maximum prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of $10,000. As of now, there has been no confirmation on whether he has retained legal representation or when he will be extradited to face trial in Miami.
Brown’s arrest adds to a long list of legal troubles that have shadowed his post-NFL life. The former All-Pro receiver has previously faced multiple charges, including battery, domestic violence, and child support violations. His football career came to an abrupt end in 2021 after an infamous on-field incident during a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, where he removed his uniform mid-match and exited the stadium.
Throughout his 12-year NFL career, Brown established himself as one of the league’s most talented and controversial figures, recording 928 receptions, over 12,000 receiving yards, and 83 touchdowns. Despite his success on the field, his career and reputation have been marred by numerous off-field controversies that continue to dominate headlines.
